Feeding a raw diet is already one of the best things you can do for your dog or cat — but “raw” doesn’t automatically mean complete if it isn’t built thoughtfully.
At Bayou Chien Raw Foods, we follow the principles of the BARF Diet, originally developed by Dr. Ian Billinghurst. That means meat, bone, and organs first, with strategic use of whole-food supplements, not synthetic pills.
Let’s break down the dos and don’ts of supplementing a raw diet, and more importantly — why it matters.
✅ DO: Use Whole Foods That Complement the Diet
🥚 Whole Eggs (with shell)
Why:
Eggs are one of nature’s most complete foods.
Benefits:
- High-quality protein
- Biotin for skin & coat
- Natural calcium (from the shell)
How:
- Lightly crush the shell
- Feed 1–3 eggs per week depending on dog size
🐟 Oily Fish (Sardines, Mackerel, Anchovies)
Why:
Omega-3s reduce inflammation and support skin, joints, heart, and brain health.
Benefits:
- EPA & DHA (natural anti-inflammatory fats)
- Supports itchy skin & allergies
How:
- Fresh or canned in water only
- 1–2 small fish weekly for most dogs
🐄 Green Tripe (Unbleached)
Why:
This is a powerhouse for gut health.
Benefits:
- Digestive enzymes
- Natural probiotics
- Appetite stimulant for picky eaters
How:
- Small amounts, 1–2 times weekly
- Smelly? Yes. Worth it? Absolutely.
🦴 Raw Meaty Bones (Appropriate Size)
Why:
Calcium isn’t optional — it’s essential.
Benefits:
- Proper calcium-to-phosphorus balance
- Dental health
- Mental enrichment
How:
- Always raw, never cooked
- Match bone size to the animal
⚠️ DO: Supplement
Based on Need
, Not Trends
Not every dog needs everything.
Examples:
- Itchy dog? Add oily fish or eggs
- Senior dog? Bone broth + collagen-rich cuts
- Puppy? Calcium balance matters more than “extras”
👉 More is not better. Targeted is better.
❌ DON’T: Rely on Synthetic Pills & Powders
Why Supplement a Raw Diet at All?
A properly balanced raw diet mimics what animals evolved to eat. But in the modern world:
- We don’t always feed full whole prey
- Animals are raised differently than wild prey
- Individual dogs have unique needs (skin, joints, digestion, age)
Whole-food supplementation helps fill natural gaps, without relying on synthetic vitamins that the body doesn’t recognize as food.
Here’s the hard truth:
Most commercial supplements are made to fix poor diets.
Problems with synthetic supplements:
- Isolated nutrients without food cofactors
- Higher risk of overdose (especially vitamins A & D)
- Poor absorption compared to whole foods
If your dog needs 10 pills a day, the diet is broken.
❌ DON’T: Stack Supplements on Top of a Balanced Raw Diet
A properly formulated raw diet already provides:
- Complete amino acids
- Natural vitamins from organs
- Bioavailable minerals from bone
Adding:
- Extra calcium
- Extra vitamin A
- Multiple “superfood powders”
…can actually throw the diet out of balance.
❌ DON’T: Add Veggies Just to “Feel Better”
Dogs and cats do not require vegetables to survive or thrive.
If you use them:
- Keep amounts small
- Think optional, not mandatory
- Never let veggies replace meat, organs, or bone
The Bayou Chien Philosophy
We believe in:
- Real food over synthetic fixes
- Balance, not trends
- Education over fear-based marketing
Our raw dog and cat nutrition is built to stand on its own — supplements should support the diet, not prop it up.
If you’re ever unsure what your pet actually needs, ask. We’d rather help you feed less — but better.
